2021.10.21 04:31 Bonzenjonas Some stuff about networking and working environments - general advice
Hey guys - I'm not a screenwriter myself, I'm a lawyer, but I'm an interested reader of this sub and really like the discussions and your creative output a lot. I just wanted to contribute something with which I am more familiar and which can be applied to most fields of employment, which is about how and why good networking actually accomplishes something for you.
The path to becoming a professional lawyer is vastly different than that of a screenwriter because you are basically guaranteed to get a job if you have a fine degree and live in a middle-sized to large city. Getting jobs at larger, "prestigious" law firms also requires connections but we, in contrast to a lot of people in creative fields that are less cynical and firmer believers in meritocracy, are not under the illusion that most people there get hired because they are supremely competent (although some of them surely are). Not everybody wants that position either because it comes with its own drawbacks (toxic work culture, no appreciation for your work, overworking etc.), I certainly prefer being self-employed and working with a partner. How did I meet that guy? Well, that's the whole point.
Before I became a lawyer I was in academia where I also learned a lot of things about sociological issues concerning the effectiveness of law. In Germany we have a classic scholar on this topic called Niklas Luhmann who also wrote about general organizational sociology and about work environments. He also has some stuff translated in english but I wouldn't recommend visiting the primary sources because it's arcanely written prose about complicated social relations. His work on organizational sociology though is pretty clear- cut.
A work environment consists of what he called "support groups" and "strategic groups". Support groups are basically coworkers supporting each other in achieving a certain set task. Strategic groups are people supervising the support groups directly underneath them, they are your bosses. The networking aspect comes into play when you consider the social relationships and possible upward mobility of the people in those groups. A support group member might become a strategic group member or vice versa if he gets demoted.
Why people in support groups should collaborate is evident - the task at hand is usually more than a single person can handle. Now the question is how you can achieve a supportive relationship with your superior strategic group. The strategic group can control the support group via supervision, which means that they ensure the task is being done properly by observing it, making suggestions or orders towards a certain behavior. Luhmanns idea now was to flip that relationship and do what he called "undervision", which basically means that you as a worker ensure that a boss feels like he is doing his job of supervising you correctly, thereby validating his position. This is what people usually refer to as "being empathic" or "being friendly", but what it mostly means in actuality is "finish a task so that the person ordering the task to be done feels like he has properly ordered it". A practical example - imagine yourself at your summer job and you have to stack some crates full of meat in the freezer. One half of the room is not properly cooled down for chicken meat but your boss ordered you to stack all the meat on that half. Now you have two options - first you could tell him "you are a fucking dumbass who doesn't give a shit - the meat will spoil if you put it there, you fucking dumbass. Fuck you." or you could say "Sir, I think the meat might spoil if I stacked it in the left half of the room. Would you suggest it to be done differently?". Both actually have the same factual content but the second version validates the position of your boss and makes him feel (1) like it was his decision and (2) like you tried to do your job properly (which is a plus).
You also have to realize that the further up somebody is in the formal working hierarchy the less that person has to do with the finished product besides managing the process of getting it finished on a very meta level. This is why some doctors don't want to be higher-ups and some lawyers don't want to be partners in a large firm - eventually you become a manager and very far removed from what you actually wanted to do in the first place. You also further have to realize that working relations aren't always strictly hierarchical but a lot of times interdependent and cyclical. The producer that calls the shots might be fired by the company that he is working for, the company he is working for might be taken over by a larger company, the larger company might go bankrupt because people don't watch their movies anymore etc.
The gist of the advice is "support people on your level" and "make your higher ups feel like they have done a great job with their decisions". You don't actually have to "make friends" or "be empathic" as is often suggested here. I'm not going to make peoples life decisions for them. You just need to realize that in order to advance in an organization you need to demonstrate that you can support people in your position (wether genuine or not is another question) and you can make your higher-ups feel comfortable in their position (wether you genuinely feel that way is also another question).
Networking isn't necessarily about being friendly or empathic as it is often portrayed to be. It's about being reliable and being perceived as pleasant to work with. It also doesn't necessarily have to do anything with the objective quality of your work. That's why you see a lot of crackpots in your work environments who probably couldn't even fall a flight of stairs properly if somebody kicked them down. It's about effectively communicating being supportive mostly.

Hit there! Been having a blast watching one punch man for maybe the 3rd time. Wanted to know if there's any decent comedy anime in the same vein. Not necessarily a super hero one, simply comedy. I also watched mob psycho 100 and it's amazing too!

2021.10.21 04:31 LEFEYETTE Chest Complaints
I know it's frustrating when you don't get what you want from a chest. But you can see what the odds are of getting a character, special chance, stand, whatever before you participate in an event or open a chest. None of them are 100%.
Also, every time you open a chest it's a new "event" so if the odds are 10% to get X it doesn't mean the game is rigged if you don't get X within 10 chests. That's just how odds work.
There's a lot of complaints "I spent 10k elixir, 200 gems". Sorry if you don't want to hear it but that's kind of on you there, GL didn't lie about what was in there and they published the odds so you could make the right decision yourself. No-one forced you to spend that much on a chance and they showed you what the chances were of getting what you want.
All of this is gambling and chance. That isn't a new thing, it has been for as long as I've been playing for the last few years. It's frustrating when you're on the wrong end but you'll have other instances where you beat the odds. And those are the instances we always tend to forget about.
And you aren't being singled out. Over the last 3 years I've probably opened about 35 spooky chests and still haven't got the Bride. It's frustrating and by now the odds have bashed me up for sure, but that's how odds and RNGs work. At some point hopefully I'll get her but it's not the end of the world. There's plenty more to do. And it's why I won't bust a gut for one measly chest that I'm likely to get some elixir from, if I do even get a special chance.
Just gotta rationalise it, enjoy other aspects and if you end up as one of the lucky ones then that's a great bonus.

2021.10.21 04:31 Previous-Task Eventual connectivity, Graph databases and the future of MDM - is it a valid model?
Has anyone been following the changes in the Master Data Manager capabilities and models becoming available?
In short, as far as I understand it, a new model (eventual connectivity where new edges between nodes are constantly discovered and data models are extended as new data is presented), and a new implementation (using graph databases to express relationships between dataset/points) seem to be emerging.
I'm interested to know if anyone with experience of graph databases beyond knowing what they are has any thoughts on how the new eventual connectivity model CluedIn are pushing? Any MDM folks out there? Is this a valid model or are there any learning from established graph theory that might serve as flags or assistance if this takes off?
Many thanks all

2021.10.21 04:31 Tijitjit876 Looking for a good matte black PLA
Hey guys! New to 3D printing here. I own an Ender 3 V2. I have been tinkering for a few weeks now and am happy with my print quality. I would like to reprint several of my printer mods with a matte black finish.
I purchased a roll of matte black PLA on Amazon. The brand was CERPRiSE. I tried for a few days to get the printer tuned to the filament with no luck. It had great adhesion and laid down nicely but I could not stop the excessive amount of stringing and my prints came out weak and brittle. I could snap them very easily. It’s worth noting that I was printing at 190C. I did a temp tower and every temp had stringing and anything above 195C printed with a glossy finish.
I returned the filament and now I’m in the market for another.
TLDR - I’m not having much luck finding matte black filaments on the market. Can you guys recommend any? Do any of the “black” filaments print with more of a matte finish? I’m located in Canada BTW.
